This years ASID National Student Summit took place in the motherland of all things design, the ever-bustling New York City, and as anyone who has attended in the past knows, it is THE event of the year to attend. Attracting more than 400 attendees from colleges and universities from across the conterminous states, as well as Alaska and Hawaii, this was an impressive event. For anyone that has never been, you should highly consider going next year as there is a lot to take away. Many seminars were indeed worth their weight in gold as the various topics explored relevant, timely topics in design and included experiences, like the career fair, to ready students for our first professional positions. Scale also offered exclusive tours of top design and architect firms, including ICRAVE, Perkins and Eastman, HOK, Perkins + Will and many more which provide great insight on what happens behind the scenes while also providing a chance to get our foot in the door by allowing us to connect with working professionals from many of the firms listed.
The event itself surpassed my expectations, which I admit were a little all over the place. When I read the word seminar, my curious mind usually gets the best of me, and I often wonder if it's going to be of any interest or successful. Having said that, I was impressed with every seminar I attended at SCALE as each one covered topics that were new to me, and the panelists cared about the topics they discussed, putting a lot of thought into what they said. What I enjoyed most was the career fair, the research methods for designers seminar and getting to meet new people, both students and professionals. There's one student in particular whom I had the pleasure of getting to know better over dinner, Trish, who has a great sense of adventure, a positive vibe and a great podcast that you should check out called "The student lounge." Again, SCALE is a great event to attend if you want to network with some fantastic people and the fact that it was held in NYC this year made it all the better!
If you've never been to the Chelsea market, just know that it's a must see place for a one stop shop. Dicksons makes a mean charcuterie plate and the available, fresh seafood is superb!
Usually I'm not a fan of mid century modern furniture and office furniture can be dull, yet Herman Miller has a knack for taking these two things and making it beautiful! The quality of their work is impressive, setting the standards high, as they have some of the best mid century stuff on the market.
Think Coffee is an adorable coffee shop in the up and coming Hudson Yards, but they have locations all over NYC. The space here is warm and comforting, yet industrial, and I love it as much as their Spanish latte! Worth checking out when you need a jolt of energy.
Beaux Arts architecture may be a thing of the past, but I can't imagine a more inspiring building style to house a public library. I had a few emails and things to catch up on and where better to do that than a space like this, albeit sitting under this gorgeous ceiling was a little distracting, in all of the best ways of course!
Speaking of architecture, NYC has some of the best around!
